After winning a competition in 2005, Art & Build was tasked with extending and reorganising the Rangueil Hospital. The client stipulated that the new building was to be built in front of the existing hospital and the architects decided to make the most of the characteristics of the very sloping site. The new building stands on piles with an underground corridor and lifts linking it to the existing hospital. Laid out on four floors, it houses 20 operating theatres, 26 intensive care rooms and seven bedrooms for serious burns cases. The building approaches were redesigned and a street with an illuminated arch passes beneath the new building and leads to the main hospital. From the car park visitor access is by lift and walkway, while from the bus stop nearest the entrance access is by way of two converging paths that pass beneath the building. The green areas were replanted. To protect it from the sun, the building has a double skin, with an outer layer in terra cotta that reduces the penetration of solar rays and acts as a kind of natural air conditioning. A recessed technical floor and access bays for fire services in the case of emergency form the very expressive external appearance of the technical building that announces the modernised hospital beyond.Placed in front of the existing hospital, the new building houses the reorganised technical services section. At the same time it creates a new emblem for the institution. Opposite: the functioning chart and redesigned approaches. Access ways run beneath the building and lead to the main entrance, featuring an illuminated arch.
